Sacred Water of Ganges

'Sacred Water of Ganges' at CBK Zeeland, Water in the Arts exhibition, 2023

“The Sacred Water of Ganges” explores the stories of the river Ganges and cultural heritage of the fire prayers performed near the river bank. This art installation is the result of a two month journey through India where I traveled from the birthplace of Ganges to the place where the river dissolves into the sea. She is a 1550 miles long living entity and supports 400 million people. Ganges water is known for its curing and curative powers and has the ability to wash off sins and heal. In this project I researched the intersection of science and spirituality around Ma Ganga and how this manifests in the ritual of fire prayers.

According to Hindu religion Lord Shiva came down and slowed the holy river falling from the heavens to the earth through the locks of his hair. Lord Shiva combines in a single image Shiva's roles as creator, preserver and destroyer of the universe and conveys the Indian conception of the cyclical nature of time. The drops of water from his hair created the river and the goddess Ganga. The concept of the river’s restorative powers is related to bacteriophages (which eat bacteria). The dissolved oxygen content makes it a healthy and healing river that has the ability to cure herself.

The fire ceremony revolves around the river and is a sacred ritual that dates back to the dawn of Indian civilisation. Fire is used to link this world and the spiritual world. Fire equals light, equals humanity. Bells toll from the temples near the riverbed and little boats made of leaves, filled with rose petals, incense and a candle are placed in the water whilst prayers are sung. In fire ceremonies the flame is offered to the goddess Ganga. Fire ceremonies are a daily ritual in Hindu culture. The further up the Ganges you go, the more sacred it becomes. We started our journey in Devprayag, the place where the rivers Alakananda and Bhagirathi collide and form the river Ganges. This spiritual place is the official starting point of the Ganges on the map. From there we traveled down to the more populated foothills, Rishikesh and Haridwar, which show real adoration and love for the river. From there the river travels all the way down via Varanasi to the Bay of Bengal.

The video artwork represents the journey from the beginning of Ganges and the fire ceremonies that occur along the way. The glass water vessels contain the healing water collected in the different sacred places of my journey. The soundscape embodies the art installation with mantras, prayers and collected sounds during my trip. The scent finishes off the installation and ties in all aspects of the ritual. In the light of the current situation of energy crisis and depletion of natural sources this artwork gains an extra layer, because society worldwide has to isolate. Back to the core and basics of our existence. This project examines the water of the river Ganges, but concurrently addresses the fact that all water on earth should be holy, because it is fundamental of our existence.
