Future Geology

Installation Artwork + Sculpture + Artist Publication
Future Geology, serie of mixed media sculptures, 2011-2016

The project ‘Future Geology’ focusses on the simulation of human effects on the Earth’s crust. In the era of the Anthropocene, human activities have a global impact on the Earth. Mankind is depleting natural resources and polluting our soil. In rocks we read the story of our restless planet. We come to understand its complex patterns of interaction and the nature of change over deep geological time.

These future stones are made of artificial materials such as metal, chemical resin, plastic, textile, plaster, glass fiber and washed up materials. As environmental issues become a priority through the world’s industrial transformations, we all contribute to the changing landscape and deformation of the planet. Our landfills and oceans incorporate artificial materials and Gwen is motivated to show these changes in a contemporary, poetic and speculative manner.

Within this project Gwen approaches the notion of nature, while capturing the future of minerals, gemstones and geology. These speculative landscapes and stones emphasise the product of our earth nowadays and how this new material could function as a new resource. This cross section incorporates future minerals and questions the relation of mankind with the earth.

This project started during her education at Willem de Kooning Academy (2011). In 2019 van den Bout won the “Art and the Environment Award” with her ongoing art project. The solo exhibition at Bewaerschole shows an overview of 10 years artistic research and will be accompanied by an artist publication in limited edition.
